Voices: Inside My Head
Expanding on the idea of the head as a vessel for containment, this series explored the use of the written word as an important design element. The black head reads as negative space, with the words drawing you in.
Voices: Map Collages
This series continues the examination of language and power. The introduction of a male figure creates a tension between the man and the woman and the relationship between them. The word fragments can be understood to have been spoken by either figure, and with that choice the meaning changes. It’s also possible to consider that the words are silent thoughts, which also shifts the meaning depending upon whose thoughts are represented. The use of maps as a collage element is a subtle reference to the idea of using language to navigate relationships.
Figures
This series of paintings are larger than those in my portraits collection. These works on paper are 30x44 inches. The larger format is a nice change of pace.
Collage
This collection explores patterns, shapes, and colors using both paint and painted paper.
Voices: Entire Collection
This is a collection shares voices of many women. The viewer decides whether the message is one of aggression, a statement of fact, a gender stereotype, a voice of resistance, or a challenge to larger societal messages.
Queens
This series explores women of status articulating statements of power. In these paintings, the declarative statements do not convey any ambiguity about who wields the power.
Voices: Inside Torso
This series continues the exploration of language and power but shifts the message from the face to the torso. The black figures represent all women rather than one individual woman, drawing the viewer into the void. The thoughts expressed in this series originate with the woman and can be interpreted as articulated statements or self-talk. The viewer decides the context for the sentiments expressed.
Voices: Silhouettes
This series was the point of origin for my Voices Collection. I was interested in the simple silhouette as a container for language, with a subtle reference to the old-fashioned shadow silhouette portraits. The addition of language articulating provocative questions changes the silhouette from one of a specific individual to that of a generic female. The viewer decides the origin of the question and underlying narrative.
Portraits
This is a collection of female portraits painted in vibrant colors.
Valentines
This collection was painted in collaboration with a Valentine’s Day greeting card collection.
Modern Figures
This series explores the ambiguity that arises when the viewer does not know who is speaking to whom. The words convey different meanings depending upon who holds the power.
Voices: Outside Torso
This series continues the exploration of language and power but shifts the message from inside the figure to outside the figure. The language in these paintings is representative of comments expressed to women. The black figure represents all women rather than one individual woman, drawing the viewer into the void.
Voices: Drawings
This series of ink drawings continues the exploration of women and the language that follows them around. The meaning shifts depending upon whether the message is spoken to them or by them.
Abstract
This collection explores patterns, shapes, and colors.
Sketchbook
These paintings and collages are taken from my sketchbook and serve as small explorations into color combinations, pattern making, and abstract compositions. Sometimes these small works inspire larger pieces; other times they feed the desire to be creative while waiting for the next big idea.
